"Appaloosa" 2020.  30x36 - Pyrography on Birchwood

There is a Native American myth that tells of a village where all the men decided to go on a warpath. They came to a wooded area where they found wild horses and among them was one spotted pony. One man caught the spotted pony and brought it back home. He then instructed his wife to care for the spotted pony. This she did, and further, she had great affection for him, treating him as if he were their Chief. One summer night, she went to the horse but instead met a fine looking man dressed in a buffalo robe with a spotted horse pictured on it. The man said to her “You took care of me, it is I who was a horse.” She liked him, for he was very handsome and smelt alluring. She left her husband to go off with the man and for several years they were together. The woman then gave birth to a spotted pony. For a long time they roamed about the countryside and the woman gave birth to many more spotted ponies. Many years later people from the village were on a hunt and came across these spotted ponies. The villagers did care to attack them for they were beautiful and among them was a different looking horse. The people said, “This is the woman that was lost.” As they came across the spotted horses now and then, they decided to catch them. They were kept and greatly cared for, and as they increased, their offspring were all spotted and so the people had many more beautiful spotted ponies.

I was intrigued with this Native American myth and the reverence they had for the beauty of this animal. I was inspired to honor the beautiful Appaloosa horse by creating this artwork. To create this piece, I employed the technique of Pyrography and burnt the image onto the wood with a blowtorch. It incorporates the grain of the Birchwood as part of the composition, defining the muscles and the shape of the horse.
